Current Events – Baltimore City:  Sheila Dixon for Mayor?  Seriously?  And we wonder why Baltimore City is fouled up. #Maryland #Baltimore #Politics

Sheila Dixon was Baltimore City’s Mayor (for 3 years) after being City Council President (for 7 years) in the 2000 to 2010 timeframe. She appears to be a young 70-year old; she does good sound bites.

In 2009, she was charged with a 12 felonies and misdemeanors:  4 counts of perjury, 2 of misconduct, 3 of theft, and 3 of fraudulent misappropriations.  Among other things and perhaps the most despicable, Dixon used gift cards donated to the city, presumably to be given to needy folks, for her own purposes.

As part of a plea deal, Dixon had to resign as mayor … was found guilty on 1 misdemeanor embezzlement charge … was sentenced to 4 years of probation … had to donate $45,000 to the Bea Gaddy Foundation …  had to serve 500 hours of community service … and had to sell gifts she received from developers and electronics that she purchased with the gift cards.

She’s a convicted criminal but ran for Mayor in 2016 and 2020.   The good people of Baltimore vote for her.  She was a close 2nd in the Democratic primary in both 2016 and 2020.

She’s trying again in 2024.  And get this, on an anti-crime and accountability agenda.

My councilperson (Eric Costello) endorses her in the 2024 mayoral election.  When he was running for office, the current Baltimore City State’s Attorney (Ivan Bates) ran a TV ad featuring an endorsement by Dixon.  An xUnder Secretary of the US Treasury and former mayoral candidate (Mary Miller) partnered with Dixon to form a PAC supporting Bates.

If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.  Why would Costello, Bates, and Miller tarnish their (I assume) otherwise good names in this way?  Aside from Dixon’s proven electability, I shudder to think it’s because they know something we don’t about the other candidates:  incumbent Mayor Brandon Scott and Thiru Vignarajah, xDeputy Attorney General of Maryland.
