Some statistics on different countries’ “pledges” of military aid to Ukraine flashed by my consciousness. I wondered if the US was shouldering more than its fair share of the load. The answer is no.
How much of a country’s wealth do they commit to Ukraine? I found a neat table with aid to Ukraine (financial, humanitarian, and military for the 2 years between January 2022 and 2024) … as a % of the 2021 donor country GDP. Credit to statista.com.
I guess some might argue but GDP seems a reasonable measure of how wealthy a country is … “bundling” financial, humanitarian, and military aid also seems reasonable; different countries have different resources, capabilities, and values.
The Data Says (aka Money talks, BS walks): Surprising to me, anyway, the USA is way down the list, about the same as Bulgaria. France, Italy, and Spain only do slightly more than South Korea … and a lot less than Japan?? Not surprising, if you’re close to Russia, you’re more committed.
