Life & Living: Best Interview I’ve seen on the Big C.

Great questions by David Rubenstein (to my mind, the right ones)… and great answers by Dr. David Agus (clear, succinct, expert).  Health, preventative and corrective, and the current state and future of cancer diagnosis and treatment.  Since I’d like all my family and friends to have a long, high-quality life, I highly recommend they watch […]

Current Events:  Open Primaries in New Mexico.  Why not Maryland?

Here’s a note I sent to a bunch of Maryland state delegates and senators.  If you want Open Primaries in Maryland, you might consider doing the same. Like in Maryland, a little over 1 out of 5 New Mexico voters are unaffiliated.  Like in Maryland, Democrats hold the governorship and majorities in both chambers of the

Current Events:  Remember I want my MTV?  Well, I want unbiased, trustworthy, clear, succinct news.

By nature and choice, I’m a trusting person.  I disdain … if not abhor … cynicism and skepticism.  Both are negative, unproductive, and no way to go through life. But increasingly, I don’t know what news and news sources to trust.  That’s bad, really bad. Example.   I saw some YouTubes that seemed to imply that

Current Events: And you wonder why our governor & legislators in Annapolis are tearing their hair out — DOGE Impact on Maryland

There are about 325K federal civilian employees and 225K federal contractors in Maryland.  That’s 550K jobs.   There are about 3.2M people in Maryland’s civilian labor force (government and non-government).   Let’s say DOGE cuts 10% of the federal civilians and federal contractors.  That’s 10% times 550K = 55K.    As of Dec 2024,

Current Events: DOGE 3.0 — Federal contractors cost more than federal civilian employees. And, there are a lot of them.

You can do your own research and see what you find.  Here’s what I found. A Google search confirmed my assumption that federal civilian employees cost less, a lot less, than federal contractors. “Specifically, the federal government approves service contract billing rates—deemed fair and reasonable—that pay contractors 1.83 times more than the government pays federal

Current Events: Depopulation. Wow, big changes ahead.

Highly recommend reading and thinking about this report from McKinsey:  “Dependency and depopulation?  Confronting the consequences of a new demographic reality.”  https://www.mckinsey.com/mgi/our-research/dependency-and-depopulation-confronting-the-consequences-of-a-new-demographic-reality?stcr=D5B28FF38E8F4D5EBDD1CCD3F16ECB14&cid=other-eml-nsl-mip-mck&hlkid=807c158e7ecd4e4e96d5c6f40e00aea7&hctky=11603926&hdpid=70a8e81a-5986-4fe1-b4ca-f1f2de0cbe03 It is dense and daunting but does a great job of defining the problem. It also offers some solutions. The solutions don’t strike me as very robust. But maybe that’s the risk averse

Life & Living:  After 35 years, a Reunion of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program’s 106 class.

Yesterday we had a virtual zoom reunion of my classmates from the 106th Advanced Management Program (AMP) at the Harvard Business School.  AMP is kind of a mini-MBA, 13 weeks full-time on campus.  It was the best educational experience of my life thanks to the expert and wonderfully engaging faculty and my classmates. There were

Current Events:  Government Efficiency and DOGE — Palentir CEO Alex Karp on Elon Musk and DOGE

I’m thinking out loud.  I am a lifelong centrist Democrat.  I lean right on national security and economic prosperity and growth.  I lean left on social progress. I advocate for the Democrats working with Musk on DOGE.  So does Karp; watch this short video.  The Democratic Party needs to get on board with what most

Current Events:  Immigration — What you thought you knew about where U.S. immigrants work might be wrong.

Thinking out loud.  If we all had the same FACTS, we’d see less division, fewer extremes, and way less people believing misinformation.  But do we actually know the numbers? USAFacts is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit initiative founded by ex-Microsoft CEO (and wonderfully bald) Steve Ballmer.  They present only official government data.  No spin — just facts.
